In less than a tenth of a second of meeting or seeing someone for the first time, the human brain processes a lot of information in relation to the person’s face leading to quick conclusions about their qualities, trustworthiness, friendliness, competence, honesty, and morality. The moment humans encounter someone new, the body needs to access whether they would inflict harm or be an ally.
First impressions matter a lot, and you only get one shot to make this impression. To create a lasting first impression on whoever you meet, here are some sure ways to go about it.
Be on time
Being on time is good behavior and is always non-negotiable. Always be on time. Being late is an expression of not being mindful and portrays a bad impression. It can be one of the biggest mistakes you may not recover from, as it sets the tone for the rest of the meeting – everything else seems to be amiss and lagging. Being early can help you feel more relaxed and get you to the mood of what is to be discussed.
Be mindful of your body language
Your body language speaks a lot about the type of person you are. It can help you get what you need or it can hinder you. When you are nervous, it is visible through the way stand or your hands. The same is evident when you are confident. A confident person will stand tall and make eye contact. If you need to have quick confidence, be it in a meeting or interview, take a power pose.
Beware of the way you speak
When speaking, ensure you do so in a clear and even tone. You would not want to be too loud or too quiet. As humans, we all different pronunciations and regional slangs that may even make us use filler words. Pay total attention to the way you express yourself through speech, as it is these little things that determine the type of impression we leave. When dealing with a person in a position above yours, avoid the use of slang. Using filler words such as ‘um’. will make you look less knowledgeable.
Dress to impress
The way you express and present yourself starts with your clothing. You need to know the most appropriate way to dress for every occasion. If you are going for an interview, it would be best to dress in a suit and tire, well-trimmed hair and look professional. For startups, they may have a relaxed dress code, so do some research to determine the best dressing. If you are going for a date, ensure your dressing reflects the event you are going to.
Put your phone away
Talking to someone, whether the first time or not, equals rudeness. It shows you don’t care about what is currently happening and you are not fully committed or interested in what is happening. Irrespective of whether you are one of the world’s greatest multi-tasker, any moment you involve the use of your phone in the middle of conversation portrays rudeness.
